217 opportunity from time to time to add to his income by drawing lapsing leave salary.
This has been a consideration of some importance in several cases. I on one occasion received a bonus of $100.00 when serving as Secretary of the 1894 Plague Housing Commission.
I was not informed in my agreement (1891) that I had to find security for $2,000 and in consequence have lost about £80 stg. through having to lodge money from home in the Hong-Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation on deposit and experiencing the loss by fall in exchange.
I have no intention of making a claim in this connection, but Mr. Johnstone of the Colonial Office admitted that it was an unfortunate clerical error on the part of the Crown Agents for the Colonies in omitting to insert this condition in my agreement, and I mention it here as it may influence His Excellency to consider favourably the question of my remuneration.
I would add that since my arrival in Hong Kong in April 1891 my total increase in salary has been $50.00 per month, the increase being made after the resignation of Mr. Rennie from the charge
